Abstract:Today, brain stimulation techniques are used widely in research and clinical practices. But the main methods used for neuro-stimulation including electrical-, optical-, and magnetic-mediated approaches have some limitations. Interestingly, the attractive combination of non-invasive, reversible neuromodulation with spatial selectivity on the order of millimeters based on ultrasonic waves has brought powerful new tools to precisely grasp the neural circuits and to explore the normal function of the human brain. In this review, we summarize the primer on relevant ultrasonics, ultrasonic neuromodulation results and relevant biophysical mechanisms and ultrasonic sensitive ion channels.
