ABSTRACT Objective Explore the application value of ultrasound in the treatment of peripheral facial paralysis. Methods Selected60 cases of patients with facial paralysis in Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, randomly divided them into experimental group(30 cases)and control group(30 cases),the two groups was given the same routine medical treatment, the experimental group add acupuncture treatment (the facial local three-line acupoint selection: Shenting、Yintang、Shuigou、Chengjiang、Yangbai、Yuyao、Chengqi、Sibai、Juliao、Dicang、Taiyang、Xiaguan、Jiache)once a day,for 2 courses,a total of 28 days. Using doppler ultrasound to record and compare the systolic peak velocity(Vs),end-diastolic velocity(Vd)and resistance index (RI)of the patients’ bilateral arteries and their branches before acupuncture treatment and the 1,3,7,14,28 days, respectively,in the two groups. Results Before acupuncture treatment, the Vs and Vd of the ipsilateral facial arteries and their branches of all patients were lower than the contralateral ones, but the RI was higher, and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05),however,there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The Vs and Vd of ipsilateral arteries and their branches increased and the RI decreased gradually with the prolongation of treatment time, and changes in the experimental group were more obvious.,after the 7th day of treatment, the Vs and Vd of ipsilateral arteries were significantly higher than those in the experimental group, and the RI was significantly lower(all P<0.05);After 28 days of the treatment, the blood flow parameters of the ipsilateral arteries returned to normal, and there was no significant difference compared with the contralateral side, while the blood flow parameters of ipsilateral sides in control group were still lower than those in contralateral sides, the difference was s statistically significant(all P<0.05). Conclusion Color Doppler ultrasound can be used to quantitatively monitor the changes of arterial blood flow parameters during acupuncture treatment. It can be used as an important imaging basis of efficacy evaluation for acupuncture treatment of peripheral facial paralysis.
