Reporter genes are crucial tools for ultrasound imaging research with the advantages of convenience, reliability and high sensitivity, which can image various biological and genetical processes at the molecular, cellular and multicellular levels. This review summarizes the developed reporter genes and the application for ultrasound imaging research, providing new clues and ideas for the further application in biomedical engineering.
